You will study for a BTEC Extended Diploma in Public Services based at The Mosslands School, Wallasey starting September 2018.

This is a two-year programme designed for 16-19-year-old young adults that are interested in a career in the armed forces, police, fire service, prison services or third sector organisations. This course will provide you will the skills, qualities and importantly the nationally recognised qualification you will need for a successful career in the protective services

The course will be delivered by highly qualified and experienced teachers, who have first-hand experience in the Protective Services.

What will I study?

Year 1

Part 1 (Core) Extended Diploma in Public Services in Level 3, which consists of the following units;

  • Unit 1 Government, Policies and the Public Services
  • Unit 2 Leadership and Teamwork in the Public Services
  • Unit 3 Citizenship, Diversity and the Public Services
  • Unit 4 Understanding Discipline in the Uniformed Public Services
  • Unit 6 Fitness Testing and Training for the Uniformed Public Services
  • Unit 10 Skills for Land-based outdoor and adventurous activities
  • Unit 13 Command and Control in the Uniformed Public Services
  • Unit 31 Exercise, Health and Lifestyle

Year 2

  • Unit 5 Physical Preparation, Health and Lifestyle for the Public Services
  • Unit 7 International Institutions and Human Rights
  • Unit 8 Understand the impact of war, conflict and terrorism on Public Services
  • Unit 9 Outdoor and Adventurous Expeditions
  • Unit 11 Skills for Water-based outdoor and adventurous activities
  • Unit 12 Crime and it’s effects
  • Unit 15 Planning and Management of Major Incidents
  • Unit 21 Custodial Care Services
  • Unit 29 Security Procedures in the Public Services
  • Unit 30 Practical Team Sports

Part 2 (PSA Syllabus)

which will provide you with the opportunity to develop your wider skills and qualities in preparation for entry into the uniformed public services or university study. PSA will consist of:

  • Physical training and sports
  • Field craft
  • First aid
  • Personal development
  • Guest speakers from all public services
  • Regular trips
  • Overnight Residential

This unique programme of combining a nationally recognised qualification with a bespoke preparation package will ensure that you leave with the knowledge and understanding of the work performed by uniformed public services and the environments they operate in both at home and abroad. You will have developed the necessary communication, leadership, teamwork and organisational skills required to be successful in the uniformed public services. Additionally, you would have also developed your physical and mental robustness which will support you passing entrance tests and exams when joining the uniformed public services

How will I be assessed?

Both parts of the programme will be assessed through the following methods;

  • Written work (Essays and Reports)
  • Demonstrations, Presentations
  • Practical Assessment, Participation
  • Reflection
  • Self/Peer Assessment

Career Options and Progression routes

The Extended Diploma in Protective Service Level 3 is equivalent to THREE A Levels qualifications, meaning that this qualification allows you to gain a maximum of 168 UCAS points. This will put you in a unique position on successful completion of the course; Join the uniformed public services or progress to university.

Here are some examples of the types of Protective Services that uniformed public services students typically join;

Police, Fire, Ambulance Service, British Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Air Force, HM Prison and Probation Service, HM Revenue and Customs, Border Force, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Royal National Lifeboats Institute, Mountain Rescue Service

Here is some example of the types of University courses that Uniformed Public Services students typically progress onto;

BA (Hons) Public Service, BA (Hons) Policing Studies, BSc (Hons) Psychosocial Analysis of Offending Behaviour, BSc (Hons) Community Policing and Criminal Investigation, BSc (Hons) Cybersecurity, BSc (Hons) Policing and Criminal Investigation.

Entry Requirements

The first thing we are after at Protective Services Academy is the right individual, this comes in all different forms but the basic requirements would be, commitment, grit, sense of humour and willingness to ‘have a go’.

You will also need:

  • 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above (including English and Maths)
  • Any Level 2 Diploma at Merit level plus grade C/4 or above in English and Maths

*However, if you have not achieved the Maths and/or English, you can still join the course but would have to do these qualifications alongside the Extended Diploma course.

All applicants are required to undertake the PSA Selection test which will include:

  • a fitness test
  • planning assessment
  • interview.
